How to Segment Stripe Customers by Plan, Status and Spend
Short answer: to segment Stripe customers, sync each customer's plan, subscription status, trial end, renewal date and total spend into your email platform, then build saved audiences on those fields. "Active customers on the Starter plan" or "customers who've spent over $500" become lists that update themselves as Stripe events arrive.
One newsletter to everyone who's ever paid you treats a trial user, a three-year customer and a March cancellation alike. They aren't, and Stripe already knows the difference. Stripe customer segmentation is how you use that knowledge: each group gets the email that fits where they are.
Below: every Stripe field you can segment on, ten segments worth saving, and how segments drive automations.
The Stripe fields you can segment on
Once Stripe is connected to Audienceful, six fields sync onto each contact as Stripe events arrive, and payments add up to a total spend. Here's each one, an example rule, and what to send the people it finds.
Stripe Customer ID
Set for anyone with a Stripe customer record. Guest buyers from Checkout and Payment Links don't have one, so pair the negative rule with spend.
- Rule: Stripe Customer ID is not set AND Total spend has not spent $1, any time
- Finds: newsletter subscribers and leads who've never bought.
- Send: your sales emails, case studies and trial invitations, without bothering paying customers.
Stripe Subscription ID
Set once a contact has had a subscription. It separates subscribers from one-off buyers.
- Rule: Total spend has spent $1, any time, AND Stripe Subscription ID is not set
- Finds: customers who've only made one-time purchases, guest buyers included.
- Send: an introduction to your subscription or membership.
Stripe Subscription Status
The most useful field of all. It uses Stripe's own status values, in lowercase: active, trialing, past_due, paused, canceled and a few rarer ones.
- Rule: Stripe Subscription Status is
active - Finds: everyone currently paying.
- Send: product updates, feature announcements, referral asks.
A contact holds one subscription's status. If a customer has several, Audienceful keeps the most active one, so a cancelled add-on won't drop them out of your "active" audience while their main plan is still running.
One thing status won't show: a scheduled cancellation. In Stripe, a subscription set to cancel at period end stays active until it ends. To segment those customers, add a tag in an automation that starts on Subscription scheduled to cancel.
Stripe Plan
The plan name from Stripe. Audienceful uses the price's nickname if you've set one, otherwise the product name.
- Rule: Stripe Plan is
StarterAND Stripe Subscription Status isactive - Finds: active customers on your entry plan.
- Send: an upgrade offer focused on what the next plan adds. This is how you email customers by subscription plan without exporting anything.
If your monthly and annual prices share one product and have no nicknames, both show the same plan name. Give each price a nickname in Stripe, like "Pro Monthly" and "Pro Annual", and you can use includes Monthly as a rule.
Stripe Trial Ends
The date a trial ends. Date fields support within last, is after, is before, is set and is not set.
- Rule: Stripe Trial Ends within last 30 days AND Stripe Subscription Status is
canceled - Finds: trials that ended recently without converting, if your Stripe settings cancel a trial that ends without payment.
- Send: a short "what got in the way?" email with an offer to extend.
For reminders before a trial ends, use the Subscription trial will end trigger or a date trigger instead of an audience. Audience date rules look backward or at fixed dates, not a rolling "next 7 days".
Stripe Renews On
The end of the current billing period, which is when the subscription next renews.
- Rule: Stripe Renews On is before a fixed date, such as the end of next month, AND Stripe Plan includes
Annual - Finds: annual customers renewing soon.
- Send: a renewal reminder that recaps what they got this year.
Like trial dates, this field is best used in a date trigger: "7 days before Stripe Renews On" fires for every customer at the right moment, every time.
Total spend
The sum of each contact's Stripe payments, with refunds netted out. You can set an amount and a time window: any time, within the last N days, or between two dates.
- Rule: Total spend has spent $500, any time
- Finds: your highest-value customers.
- Send: a personal thank-you, early access, or a request for a case study.
The negative works too: has not spent $1 within the last 180 days finds buyers who've gone quiet. Run the historical import first, or spend only counts payments made since you connected.
10 Stripe customer segments worth saving
One rule to know before you build these: each audience is either all-AND (match every condition) or all-OR (match any). To combine both, build two audiences.
| Segment | Rule | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Active customers | Status is active |
Product updates and your monthly newsletter |
| Trial users | Status is trialing |
Setup tips and customer stories, never "thanks for your purchase" |
| Past due | Status is past_due |
Leave them out of promotions; your dunning flow handles them |
| Cancelled customers | Status is canceled |
A quarterly "what's new since you left" |
| Entry-plan customers | Plan is Starter AND Status is active |
Upgrade offer with the one feature they're missing |
| Monthly payers | Plan includes Monthly AND Status is active |
Monthly-to-annual offer |
| High spenders | Has spent $500, any time | Thank-you note, beta invites, case study ask |
| One-time buyers | Has spent $1 AND Subscription ID is not set | Your subscription or next product |
| Quiet buyers | Source is Stripe AND has not spent $1 within last 180 days | A reminder of what's new, or a reorder nudge |
| Leads, not customers | Customer ID is not set AND has not spent $1 | Trial invitations and sales content |
Before any promotional send, add your marketing consent tag or publication to the rule. Emailing Stripe customers covers why billing email and marketing email need different permission.
Combine Stripe data with email engagement
Billing data says who someone is; engagement says whether they're listening. Audience rules can use open rate, click rate, last activity date, and whether someone opened or clicked a specific email.
A few combinations that work well:
- Engaged active customers. Status is
activeAND click rate greater than 10%. These are the people to ask for referrals and reviews. - Upgrade-curious. Plan is
StarterAND clicked your pricing email. They looked; send a follow-up with an answer to the obvious question. - Customers who missed the announcement. Status is
activeAND did not open the launch email. Resend with a new subject line. - Cancelled but still reading. Status is
canceledAND last activity within the last 30 days. They're your best win-back prospects.
Segments that update themselves
A saved audience isn't a snapshot. Every time Stripe reports a change, the contact's fields update and they move in or out of the right audiences. A trial that converts leaves "Trial users" and joins "Active customers" without anyone touching a spreadsheet. A new payment re-checks spend-based audiences for that customer.
That's the big difference from exporting a Stripe customer list by status. The export is right on the day you make it. The audience is right whenever you send.
Use segments as automation triggers and goals
Segments also drive automations, in three ways:
- As triggers. Person enters audience and Person leaves audience start a flow when someone matches or stops matching. Enter "High spenders" and get a thank-you from the founder. Leave "Active customers" and get a check-in.
- As goals. A goal ends a flow once someone reaches the outcome. Your trial flow's goal is Stripe Subscription Status is
active; your upgrade flow's goal is Stripe Plan isPro. Contacts who convert exit, so nobody gets "please upgrade" after upgrading. - As scopes. Date triggers can be limited to audiences. "7 days before Stripe Renews On, for Monthly payers only" is one automation.
The event-driven flows, such as trials, failed payments and cancellations, are covered in our Stripe email automation guide.
How to do it in Audienceful
- Connect Stripe from Integrations with Stripe Connect. Step-by-step.
- Run the historical import with All selected, so existing customers arrive with their subscription fields and spend.
- Name your prices. If plan names look like
price_1Ab..., add nicknames to your prices in Stripe so Stripe Plan is readable. - Build a filter. In People, click Filter, pick a Stripe field, choose the operator and value, and check the count.
- Save as audience. Name it clearly ("Active - Starter plan") so it's easy to pick in the publisher.
- Send or automate. Choose the audience when you publish a campaign, or use it as a trigger, goal or scope in an automation.
You can also describe segments in plain English. Audienceful's AI agent builds audiences from a prompt; the top customers recipe shows how. More on segmenting in general on our email segmentation page, and everything Stripe-specific on the Stripe integration page.
Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $29/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Start free and connect Stripe in a few clicks.
FAQs
Can I segment Stripe customers by subscription plan?
Yes. The Stripe Plan field syncs onto each contact, using the price nickname if you've set one or the product name if not. Combine it with Stripe Subscription Status is active to target current customers on a plan.
How do I find customers who are about to cancel?
Stripe keeps a subscription active until a scheduled cancellation takes effect, so status alone won't show it. Start an automation on Subscription scheduled to cancel, add a tag in it, and build an audience on that tag.
Do Stripe segments update automatically?
Yes. Saved audiences re-check contacts as Stripe events update their fields, and new payments re-check spend-based audiences. There's nothing to re-export.
Why is my high spenders segment empty?
Total spend only includes payments Audienceful has recorded. Run the historical import with payments included; spend-based audiences recompute when it finishes.
Can I combine AND and OR in one segment?
Not in a single audience: each one matches all of its conditions or any of them. Build two audiences when you need both kinds of logic.
Email? Easy.
