What Stripe Emails Your Customers, and What It Leaves to You
Short answer: yes, Stripe sends some customer emails, and only if you switch them on. It can email receipts for payments and refunds, invoices, failed card payment notices, trial ending reminders, upcoming renewal reminders and expiring card warnings. It doesn't send onboarding sequences, win-backs, newsletters or any email to a segment of your customers. For those you need an email platform.
If you've just set up Stripe, it's easy to assume it handles your billing emails. Some of it, it does. But each email is a separate setting, the defaults may not be what you expect, and Stripe's emails stop at the transaction. Everything that turns a payment into a long-term customer is left to you.
This guide lists every email Stripe can send, where to turn it on, what you can change, and where Stripe's emails end. Everything about Stripe here comes from Stripe's own documentation as of October 2026. Settings move around, so check the labels in your Dashboard.
Every email Stripe can send
| When Stripe sends it | Where to switch it on | |
|---|---|---|
| Payment receipt | After a successful payment. Nothing is sent for failed or declined payments | Customer emails settings, "Successful payments" |
| Refund receipt | When a payment is refunded, to the email on the original charge | Customer emails settings, "Refunds" |
| Invoice | When an invoice is sent, with a link to the hosted invoice page | Invoicing and Billing settings |
| Failed card payment | After each failed subscription payment, with a link to update the payment method | Billing settings, "Send emails when card payments fail" |
| Trial ending reminder | 7 days before a free trial ends; immediately if the trial is shorter than 7 days | Billing settings, free trial messaging |
| Upcoming renewal reminder | Before a subscription renews, using your "Upcoming renewal events" timing | Billing settings, "Send emails about upcoming renewals" |
| Expiring card | 1 month before the default card on file expires | Billing settings, "Send emails about expiring cards" |
A few rules worth knowing:
- Renewal reminders only go to automatically charged subscriptions. If a subscription uses
send_invoicebilling, Stripe doesn't send them. - Trials get one reminder, not two. If both trial and renewal reminders are on, a customer in a trial only gets the trial ending email. Renewal reminders start with later billing periods.
- Test mode doesn't email like live mode. Test payments don't send receipts automatically, and in a sandbox Stripe's billing emails only go to addresses on your verified domain or your team members.
- Stripe keeps a 30-day log of the emails it sent, on each customer's page.
What you can customize
Stripe's emails carry your branding, but the wording is Stripe's. From the Branding settings you can set:
- Your logo and icon, square, at least 128 × 128 pixels.
- A brand color and an accent color.
- Public details such as your support phone number and website.
On receipts you can also show a description of the payment, which you set through the API. Stripe gives you a live preview and a "send test receipt" button in the Branding settings.
What you can't do is write the email. There's no editor for the body, no second or third email in a sequence, no different version for different plans, and no way to add a section about your product. That's by design: these are account notices, not marketing.
What happens when a payment fails
The failed card payment email is only half of Stripe's recovery. The other half is retries. Stripe's Smart Retries picks retry times for failed subscription payments. The recommended setting is 8 tries within 2 weeks, and Smart Retries needs Billing Scale. Otherwise you can set a custom schedule of up to three retries.
After the final retry, Stripe does what your settings say: cancel the subscription, mark it unpaid, leave it past due, or pause it if the subscription is eligible. Your emails should match this. A "final notice" that says the account will be paused is wrong if Stripe is set to cancel.
Stripe's failed payment email is one notice per failure. A proper dunning sequence escalates: a calm first email, a firmer reminder, a final notice with a real deadline. Stop it the moment the card works. See dunning emails for Stripe for what that looks like.
What Stripe doesn't send
Stripe's customer emails are tied to a transaction. Here's what's left to you:
- Onboarding. Nothing from Stripe helps a trial user get value before the trial ends. The trial ending reminder is a deadline, not a reason to stay.
- A dunning sequence. One notice per failure, in Stripe's words. No escalation, no personal tone, no goal that stops the sequence once they've paid.
- Saving a cancellation. When a customer schedules a cancellation, they keep access until the period ends. Stripe doesn't send anything to change their mind.
- Win-backs. Nothing after a subscription ends.
- Upgrade and annual offers. No way to email everyone on one plan.
- Newsletters and product updates. Stripe isn't a broadcast tool.
- Revenue by email. Stripe can't tell you which email drove a payment.
How to combine Stripe's emails with your own
Stripe's emails and your email platform work best together. The trick is deciding who sends what, so customers never get two versions of the same message.
- Keep receipts, refund receipts and invoices in Stripe. Customers expect them from Stripe's address, and they're the official record.
- Keep expiring card emails in Stripe. They're short, useful and tied to the card on file.
- Pick one sender for failed payments. Either keep Stripe's single notice and skip your own, or turn Stripe's off and run a sequence with your own copy. Running both means two "your payment failed" emails at once.
- Pick one sender for trial reminders. Stripe's goes out 7 days before the trial ends. A reminder from your email platform can go out closer to the deadline, with copy about what they'll lose. If you send your own, consider turning Stripe's off.
- Run everything else from your email platform. Onboarding, cancellation saves, win-backs, upgrade offers and newsletters, triggered by the same Stripe events.
How to add the missing emails in Audienceful
Audienceful connects to Stripe natively, so the emails Stripe doesn't send can start from the same events:
- Connect Stripe from Integrations with Stripe Connect. No API key, no webhook. Step-by-step.
- Import your history with the one-time historical import, so existing customers and their spend are included.
- Start from templates. The Stripe automation templates cover trial onboarding, trial ending, failed payments, past due, cancellation win-back, receipts with an upsell, and refund follow-ups. Each arrives paused with its Stripe trigger set.
- Add the moments Stripe skips. The Subscription scheduled to cancel trigger catches customers while they can still be saved.
- Send campaigns by plan. Each contact carries their Stripe plan, subscription status, trial end, renewal date and total spend, so an upgrade offer or price change notice goes to exactly the right people.

FAQs
Does Stripe send email receipts automatically?
Only if you turn them on. In your Dashboard's customer email settings, switch on receipts for successful payments and for refunds. Stripe doesn't send receipts automatically for test payments; you can send one manually from the payment's page.
Can I customize Stripe's emails?
Partly. You can set your logo, icon, brand and accent colors, and public details like your website and support phone number, and add a payment description on receipts. You can't edit the body of the email or add more emails to a sequence.
Does Stripe send a trial ending email?
Yes, if you enable it in your Billing settings. Stripe sends the reminder 7 days before the trial ends, or immediately if the trial is shorter than that. Separately, the customer.subscription.trial_will_end webhook fires 3 days before by default, which is what most email platforms use for their own reminder.
Does Stripe email customers when a payment fails?
Yes, with "Send emails when card payments fail" switched on. Stripe sends an email after each failed payment with a link to update the payment method, and retries the charge on its own schedule. It doesn't send a multi-step sequence.
Can Stripe send marketing emails or newsletters?
No. Stripe's emails are account and payment notices. For newsletters, onboarding sequences, win-backs and campaigns to a group of customers, connect Stripe to an email platform.
