Stripe Payment Links + Email: Automatic Follow-Up for Coaches and Consultants
Short answer: Stripe Payment Link email automation means a payment on your link starts a follow-up sequence on its own: a welcome with the booking link, a prep email, an after-session check-in and a testimonial ask. Use a tool that triggers on the payment itself, not on a new Stripe customer, because most one-off Payment Link buyers check out as guests.
Payment Links are the fastest way for a coach or consultant to get paid. You create a link for a session or package, share it, and Stripe handles the checkout. What it doesn't handle is getting the client booked, prepared and looked after.
This guide covers why Payment Links trip up a lot of email setups, the sequence every payment should start, how to handle several offers and recurring plans, and how to set it up in Audienceful.
Why Payment Link buyers are often guests
When a Payment Link or Stripe Checkout runs in payment mode (a one-off charge rather than a subscription), Stripe creates a Customer record only if it's required. Stripe calls the rest guest customers. The payment, the amount and the buyer's email are all recorded, but there's no Customer object behind them.
For a coach selling single sessions or a fixed-price package, that means most buyers are guests. Subscriptions are different: a recurring plan always needs a Customer, so those buyers get one.
What guest checkouts break
Most email setups that connect to Stripe assume every buyer is a Stripe customer. With guests, three things tend to go wrong:
- "New customer" triggers never fire. A welcome email set to send when a Stripe customer is created skips every guest. In Audienceful, the Customer created event has the same limit, which is why your follow-up should start on Payment succeeded instead.
- Customer syncs miss them. Tools that copy your Stripe customer list into your email list only see people with a Customer record. Guests never arrive, so they never get your emails.
- Zapier recipes go quiet. A zap built on "new customer" misses guest buyers the same way. More in Zapier vs a native integration.
The fix is to trigger on the payment and take the email from what Checkout collected. In Audienceful, payment events cover invoices, Stripe Checkout and Payment Links, and a guest buyer with no Stripe customer record still becomes a contact and enters your flows.
The Stripe Payment Link email automation sequence
Here's a sequence that works for most one-to-one coaching and consulting offers. Every email after a Stripe payment should have one job.
| When | Job | |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome and booking | Straight away | Confirm what they bought, link to book, say what happens next |
| Prep | 1 to 2 days later | Questions to think about, anything to send you beforehand |
| After-session follow-up | About a week later | A recap prompt, next steps, an easy way to ask a question |
| Testimonial or referral ask | 2 to 3 weeks later | One short ask, with the exact words you'd like them to answer |
Welcome and booking
Send this the moment the payment succeeds. Give them the booking link, what to expect in the first session and how to reach you.
Example email:
Subject: You're in, {{first_name}}. Here's the next step
Thanks for signing up. The first thing to do is pick a time for our first session: [Book your session]. It takes a minute.
Our first call is 60 minutes on Zoom. We'll spend it on where you are now and what you want to change. You don't need to prepare anything yet; I'll send a few questions before we meet.
Prep
A day or two later, send three or four questions to think about before the first session. Clients who arrive prepared get more from the hour. If you use an intake form, link it here.
After-session follow-up
This is the email most coaches mean to send and don't. Ask what stuck, remind them of the one action they agreed to, and tell them how to ask a quick question between sessions. A Stripe checkout follow-up email like this can be what turns a single session into a package.
One limit to know: the timing runs from the payment, not the session. If clients often book weeks out, see the custom event option in the next section.
Testimonial or referral ask
Two or three weeks after the payment, ask for one thing: a one-line reply, a review, or a referral ("If you know someone working on the same thing, forward them this").
Different offers, different emails
Most coaches sell more than one thing: a single session, a three-month package, a group program. Each deserves its own welcome. In Audienceful, any Stripe trigger can be limited to specific Stripe products, so the package flow only runs for package buyers.
There's a catch with Payment Links. Product filters work on subscriptions and invoice payments, because those events list what was bought. A one-off payment made outside an invoice carries no product. A product-scoped flow fails closed on those payments rather than guess, so it won't run.
That leaves you three practical options for one-off offers:
- One shared flow, plus a per-link confirmation page. Run a single Payment succeeded flow with no product filter, written to suit every offer. Put the offer-specific detail, such as the right booking link, on each Payment Link's own confirmation message or redirect page, which Stripe lets you set per link.
- Invoice clients instead. For consulting projects and bigger packages, send a Stripe invoice. Invoice payments carry their line items, so a product-scoped flow runs for them.
- Send a custom event from your booking tool. If your scheduler connects to Zapier or can call an API, fire a custom event when a session is booked. That event can start its own flow, and its timing follows the booking rather than the payment.
Recurring coaching plans
Monthly coaching retainers run as Stripe subscriptions, even when sold through a Payment Link. Subscriptions always have a Customer and list their product. Each renewal is also a payment, so if you sell both, add a conditional at the top of your one-off flow that continues only when Stripe Subscription Status is not set.
Subscriptions add more moments worth an email:
- Subscription activated. The welcome for a new monthly client. Product filters work here, so each plan can have its own.
- Renewal reminder. Each contact's Stripe Renews On date syncs from Stripe. A date trigger set a week before that date suits quarterly or annual plans; monthly clients don't need a reminder every month.
- Payment failed. A card fails, and the client often doesn't know. Send a calm fix-it email with a link to update the card, a reminder, then a final notice. The failed payment template does exactly that. More in dunning emails for Stripe.
- Subscription scheduled to cancel. The client has cancelled but still has sessions left in the period. Ask how it went, and offer a lighter plan or a pause.
- Subscription canceled. For coaching, a gentle close usually works better than a hard win-back. Thank them, ask for a testimonial, and leave the door open.

How to do it in Audienceful
- Connect Stripe. In Integrations, choose Stripe and authorize with Stripe Connect. There's no API key or webhook. Step-by-step.
- Import past clients. Run the one-time historical import so past buyers and their total spend are in Audienceful. New payments sync from the moment you connect.
- Create the follow-up flow. In Automations, click New Automation and choose Stripe event → Payment succeeded. Leave the product filter empty if your offers are one-off Payment Links. In the flow's settings, turn on Allow people to enter more than once so repeat clients get it each time.
- Add the four emails and waits. Welcome straight away, wait 2 days, prep, wait 5 days, follow-up, wait 2 weeks, testimonial ask. Use
{{first_name}}merge tags. - Add flows for recurring plans. A Subscription activated welcome scoped to each plan, plus the failed payment and win-back templates. Templates arrive paused with the trigger set.
- Add a goal to dunning. A goal of Stripe Subscription Status is active ends the flow once the card works.
- Switch them on. New automations are always created paused, so nothing sends until you say so.
Don't duplicate Stripe's receipt. Stripe can already email receipts for successful payments, so your welcome should be about next steps, not the amount paid.
Prefer to describe it? The AI agent and MCP server can build the flow from a prompt in Claude or ChatGPT, and it arrives paused for review.
See what follow-up earns
Each Stripe payment is credited to the email that drove it, refunds netted out, so you can see whether your after-session email leads to upgrades. Here's how revenue attribution works. For the bigger picture, see email marketing for coaches, email marketing for subscription businesses and the full Stripe integration. The Stripe email automation guide covers every event.
Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $29/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Start free and connect Stripe in a few clicks. Free includes 1 automation, enough for your payment follow-up.
FAQs
Can Stripe send a follow-up email after a Payment Link purchase?
Stripe can send a receipt, and you can set a custom confirmation message or redirect for each link. It doesn't send sequences. For a welcome, prep email and testimonial ask, connect Stripe to an email platform that triggers on payments.
Why didn't my welcome email reach a Payment Link buyer?
Most likely your flow starts on a new Stripe customer, and the buyer checked out as a guest. One-off Payment Link payments create a Customer only when required. Trigger the flow on the payment instead.
Can I send different emails for each coaching package?
Yes, for subscriptions and invoice payments, by limiting the Stripe trigger to a product. One-off Payment Link payments carry no product, so use one shared flow with offer-specific confirmation pages, invoice those clients, or send a custom event from your booking tool.
How do I time an email around the session date?
Payment triggers time emails from the payment. To follow the session date, send a custom event from your scheduler when a session is booked, or store the session date in a contact field and use a date trigger.
