Gemini for Email Marketing: App and CLI Guide

Kevin Scotton October 6, 2026

Short answer: to use Gemini for email marketing, connect it to your email platform through an email marketing MCP server. In the Gemini app that's a custom app under Connected Apps; on the command line it's one command. With Audienceful connected, Gemini can build audiences, turn a doc into a newsletter draft in your editor, schedule the send once you approve the exact recipients, and report on results.

Gemini has always been a capable writer. What's new in 2026 is that the Gemini app can connect to outside tools through custom apps, the same Model Context Protocol (MCP) that Claude and ChatGPT use. That turns it from a copywriter into something that can do the work in your email platform. This guide covers both ways in: the app for everyday marketing, and the CLI for developers and scripted jobs.

Which Gemini should you use?

Gemini app Gemini CLI or Antigravity CLI
Best for Marketers and founders writing campaigns Developers and repeatable jobs
Where gemini.google.com, then your phone Your terminal
Connects through Connected Apps → Custom apps One mcp add command or a config file
Good at Drafting from docs, quick questions, reports Setting up fields, events and lifecycle flows

Both reach the same Audienceful tools, with the same permissions and approval steps.

A note on Gemini in Gmail

Gemini in Gmail helps you write and reply to one-to-one emails. It doesn't manage a subscriber list, build segments or send campaigns, and it doesn't track opens or unsubscribes. For newsletters and marketing email you need an email platform; the rest of this guide is about connecting Gemini to one.

Step 1: Connect the Gemini app

  1. On gemini.google.com, open Settings & help → Connected Apps.
  2. Under Custom apps, click Add a custom app and enter:
Text
https://api.audienceful.com/v2/mcp
  1. Sign in to Audienceful, pick a workspace and choose what Gemini can do: view, edit and send.

Custom apps need Keep Activity turned on, and Google is rolling them out gradually, starting with personal accounts in the US. If you don't see Custom apps yet, the CLI below works today. No Audienceful account? Start free: the free plan covers up to 1,000 contacts and includes the MCP server.

Step 2: Turn a doc into a newsletter

Most newsletters start as notes somewhere else. Paste or upload them, then:

"Turn these notes into this month's customer newsletter in Audienceful. Lead with the new reporting feature, then two short updates and one button to the changelog. Subject line under 45 characters. Keep it under 300 words."

Gemini creates the draft in Audienceful on your brand theme, with a subject line and preview text. Open it in the editor to adjust anything by hand, or keep asking Gemini for edits. It changes only the blocks you mention.

Step 3: Pick the audience and schedule

"Build an audience of customers on the Pro plan who opened an email in the last 90 days. How many is that?"

Gemini previews the rule and shows the count and a few sample contacts before saving it. Then:

"Send me a test at me@yourcompany.com. If it looks right, schedule the newsletter for Wednesday at 8am to that audience. Show me the preview first."

Before anything can send, Audienceful returns a preview with the exact recipient count, sample recipients, from-address and time. Gemini shows it to you and waits for your yes. That approval works once, for exactly those people, and expires after 15 minutes.

Step 4: Ask how it went

"How did Wednesday's newsletter do against my last five sends? Which link got the most clicks?"

With Shopify or Stripe connected, you can ask about revenue too.

Using the command line

Gemini CLI works with a Gemini API key or a Gemini Code Assist license:

Bash
gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user audienceful https://api.audienceful.com/v2/mcp

Start gemini and run /mcp auth audienceful to sign in.

Antigravity CLI is what Google now offers personal Google accounts in place of Gemini CLI. It reads MCP servers from ~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json. Add Audienceful there with the same URL, then sign in with /mcp.

The command line suits work you'd rather script than click through: creating custom fields, firing test events, building onboarding sequences for a SaaS product, or pulling a weekly report into a file. Our guide to lifecycle emails from Claude Code and Cursor walks through that workflow, and every prompt in it works in Gemini too.

More prompts for Gemini

  • "What custom fields and tags do I have, and how many contacts carry each tag?"
  • "Create a welcome sequence for new subscribers: a welcome email now, our best three articles after two days, a reply-to-me question after five. Leave it paused."
  • "Duplicate last month's newsletter and update the dates and headline."
  • "How's my deliverability looking? Any bounce or complaint trends I should worry about?"
  • "Find contacts who haven't opened anything in six months and tag them inactive. Show me the count first."

There are more, each with the tools Gemini calls, in our AI email prompts library.

Guardrails

  • You choose the permissions at sign-in, and you can leave sending off.
  • Every send has to match a preview. Audienceful's server only accepts a send that matches a preview Gemini has shown you, so it can't send to more people than you saw, or send twice.
  • New automations start paused. Gemini can build the sequence, including branches, but it goes live only when you switch it on.
  • Unsubscribed contacts stay unsubscribed, and bulk changes show a count first.
  • Disconnect any time from Apps → Installed apps in Audienceful, or turn the custom app off in Gemini's Connected Apps.

Why do this in Audienceful

  • The MCP server is on every plan, including Free, so you can try this before paying anything.
  • Gemini can finish the job, from the draft to the scheduled send, instead of handing you text to paste.
  • A full email platform behind it. A collaborative editor, self-updating audiences, automations, a public newsletter archive, and native Shopify and Stripe data for revenue reporting.
  • Simple pricing. Free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans from $29/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. See pricing.
  • The same tools work everywhere. Teammates who prefer Claude or ChatGPT connect to the same workspace, and the built-in AI agent does it all inside the app.

FAQs

Can Gemini send marketing emails?

Not on its own. Connected to an email platform through an MCP server, yes. With Audienceful, Gemini can schedule a campaign after showing you the recipients and timing, and your approval works only once.

How do I add an MCP server to the Gemini app?

Open Settings & help → Connected Apps on gemini.google.com, then Add a custom app under Custom apps, and enter the server's URL. For Audienceful that's https://api.audienceful.com/v2/mcp.

Is Gemini better than ChatGPT or Claude for email marketing?

They all reach the same Audienceful tools, so the choice comes down to where you already work. If your notes and docs live in Google Workspace, Gemini is a natural fit. See Claude vs ChatGPT for email marketing for how the other two compare.

Does it cost extra?

Audienceful's MCP server is included on every plan, including Free, and doesn't use Audienceful AI credits.

Email? Easy.
