Claude vs ChatGPT for Email Marketing

Kevin Scotton October 1, 2026

Short answer: both are good at email marketing, and once they're connected to your email platform they can do the same jobs: build audiences, write campaigns, set up automations, schedule sends and report on results. Pick Claude if you write long newsletters in a consistent voice, want the connection on a free plan or your phone, or want to package your routine as a reusable skill. Pick ChatGPT if you want images made in the same chat, or your team already lives in it. You don't have to choose: both can connect to the same Audienceful workspace.

We make Audienceful, an email platform that works with both through its email marketing MCP server, so we don't mind which you pick. This comparison is about which assistant suits which kind of email work, as of October 2026.

Whichever you pick, it needs an email platform to connect to. Audienceful works with both, and with Gemini, Cursor and Claude Code: start free, with up to 1,000 contacts and the MCP server included.

The writing row is a judgment call. Most neutral comparisons we've read lean towards Claude for long-form writing and towards ChatGPT for speed and breadth, but your own voice is the real test. Give each one your three best past issues and the notes for the next one, and compare the drafts.

Setup: Claude is simpler on more plans

Claude adds Audienceful as a custom connector: Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste https://api.audienceful.com/v2/mcp, sign in. It works on every Claude plan, including Free, which allows one custom connector, and once it's added on the web it's there in Claude Desktop and the mobile apps too. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it for the organization first. Full steps: Claude integration.

ChatGPT adds Audienceful as a custom app in developer mode, on the web: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode, then Create. OpenAI lists full support, including actions that change data, for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. What Plus and Pro accounts can do has changed since launch, so check the settings on your account. Full steps: ChatGPT integration.

Verdict: Claude, if you're on a personal plan or want to work from your phone. On a company Business or Enterprise workspace, both are straightforward once an admin allows them.

Doing the work: a tie

Once connected, the two reach the same 48 Audienceful tools, so the work itself looks the same. Ask either one to:

  • "Build an audience of subscribers who clicked anything in the last 30 days. How many is that?"
  • "Draft this month's newsletter from these notes, on our theme, and send me a test."
  • "Create a win-back sequence for customers who haven't ordered in 90 days. Leave it paused."
  • "Schedule the newsletter for Tuesday at 9am to Engaged readers. Show me the preview first."
  • "Which links got the most clicks across my last ten sends?"

In both, the draft lands in Audienceful's editor rather than in the chat, automations arrive paused, and nothing sends until the assistant shows you a preview of the exact recipients and you approve. The preview step is enforced by Audienceful's server, so it works the same in either assistant: a send has to match the preview exactly, and each approval works once. Where Claude pulls ahead

  • Long newsletters in your voice. Long-form writing that holds a consistent voice is Claude's best-known strength, which matters when your issues run to 1,500 words. Put your style notes in a Project and every draft starts from them.
  • Skills for your routine. A Claude Skill packages your brand voice, structure and send routine into something you call by name: "Run the weekly newsletter." Here's how to build one for your newsletter.
  • Free and mobile. The connector works on Claude's Free plan and in the mobile apps, so you can check a send preview and approve it from your phone.
  • Finer control. You can set each Audienceful tool to always allow, needs approval or blocked in Claude, on top of the permissions you pick in Audienceful.

Where ChatGPT pulls ahead

  • Images in the same chat. ChatGPT can make a hero image or seasonal banner while it writes. Download it and drop it into the email in Audienceful's editor.
  • It's already open. If your team uses ChatGPT all day, adding a custom app is less friction than a new tool.
  • Codex for developers. OpenAI's Codex CLI connects to the same server, which suits founders wiring signup events into their app. See lifecycle emails from your editor.

Recurring work

Both now run prompts on a schedule. Claude's scheduled tasks (on paid plans) can use your connectors and skills, so "every Monday, draft this week's newsletter from the blog and send me a test" is realistic. ChatGPT's scheduled tasks work with supported apps and pause for your review when an action would change something; whether a custom app can run inside one depends on your account. Either way, tell the task to stop at the test and the send preview, so the send itself waits for you.

Which should you choose?

If you... Choose
Write a long weekly newsletter and care about voice Claude
Want to start free, or approve sends from your phone Claude
Want images made alongside the copy ChatGPT
Work in a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace ChatGPT
Are a developer setting up lifecycle email Either: Claude Code or Codex
Have a team split between the two Both, connected to the same workspace

Connecting both is common. Each connection gets its own permissions, so you might give Claude view, edit and send for the newsletter, and give a teammate's ChatGPT view only for reporting.

Why connect either one to Audienceful

  • The MCP server is on every Audienceful plan, including Free, and doesn't use AI credits.
  • The assistant can finish the job: audiences, automations and scheduled sends, not just drafts.
  • A full email platform behind it. A collaborative editor where you and your teammates can polish what the assistant drafted, automations, self-updating audiences, and native Shopify and Stripe data.
  • Simple pricing. Free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans from $29/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. See pricing.
  • There's a third option built in. Audienceful's AI agent does the same work inside the app, for teammates who don't use either assistant.

FAQs

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for writing newsletters?

Both write well. Claude is often preferred for long-form writing that holds a consistent voice; ChatGPT is quick and versatile and can make images too. The best test is to give each your past issues and next issue's notes and compare the drafts.

Can Claude or ChatGPT send emails?

Not on their own. Connected to an email platform through an MCP server, both can. With Audienceful, either one can schedule a campaign after showing you the recipients and timing, and your approval works once, for exactly those people.

Which is the best AI assistant for email marketing?

The one connected to your email platform. A connected assistant works from your real list and results and can build and schedule the email, which matters more than small differences in writing. Claude and ChatGPT both connect to Audienceful, and so do Gemini, Cursor and Claude Code.

Can I use both with the same email account?

Yes. Connect each one separately to the same Audienceful workspace. Each connection has its own permissions, and you can disconnect either from Apps → Installed apps.

Email? Easy.
