Shopify Email, Shopify MCP and AI Email Marketing: What Works Today

Short answer: none of Shopify's MCP servers can create or send an email campaign, and Shopify has no public API for its email app. AI email inside Shopify happens in the admin, where Sidekick helps you write and segment campaigns in Shopify Messaging (the app formerly called Shopify Email). The official Shopify connector for Claude and ChatGPT can read your store, but it has no email tools. To run your store's email from Claude or ChatGPT, you need an email platform with its own MCP server, connected to Shopify.

Shopify Email is now Shopify Messaging

Shopify's built-in email app is now Shopify Messaging. It covers email, SMS and WhatsApp, and every Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus store can use it.

• Pricing: 10,000 free emails a month, then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000, with lower rates beyond that. Marketing automations count toward the free allowance, except abandoned checkout, which is always free.
• Automations: ready-made abandoned checkout, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, welcome, post-purchase and customer appreciation flows. Custom logic runs in Shopify Flow with its Send marketing email action.

What Sidekick can do for email

Sidekick, Shopify's admin assistant, is the most capable AI for email inside Shopify:

• Write and edit campaigns: it can generate and edit text, change the design, add sections and generate images in a Shopify Messaging email you've started.
• Build segments: describe the customers you want in plain language and it builds the segment.
• Build automations: it creates Shopify Flow workflows from a description. They start inactive, so you switch them on.

You still review, schedule and send in the admin. Shopify's Autopilot goes further: it proposes and runs campaigns and automations for you after you approve them.

The catch is that Sidekick only works inside Shopify. You can't call it from Claude or ChatGPT, and it only knows Shopify's own email app.

Shopify's MCP servers, and why none of them send email

Shopify runs several MCP servers. None of them are for email:

Underneath that, there's no public API for creating or sending a Shopify Messaging campaign. The Admin API can create customer segments and update marketing consent, which is how outside email platforms stay in sync. But no assistant, Shopify's or anyone else's, can send a Shopify Messaging campaign from outside the admin.

How to run Shopify email marketing from Claude or ChatGPT

If you'd rather manage email from the assistant you already use, connect your store to an email platform that has an MCP server. With Audienceful:

When to use which
