Shopify Email vs Klaviyo: Which Should Your Store Use? (2026)

Kevin Scotton October 27, 2026

Shopify Email (renamed Shopify Messaging) is the right tool while email is a side channel: it's built into your admin, the first 10,000 emails each month are free, and it covers the basic automations. Klaviyo is the right tool when email is a core revenue channel and you want deep flows and detailed segments, but it costs $150/month at 10,000 contacts and $720 at 50,000. Many stores land in between, on Audienceful: real multi-step store flows and revenue per email at $79/month billed yearly for 10,000 contacts, about half Klaviyo's price.

Below we compare price, automations, segmentation and reporting, from each vendor's own pages and reviews as of October 2026, linked at the end.

Our bias, up front: we make Audienceful, which we cover in its own section below as the middle step. We've kept the Shopify and Klaviyo sections to what those companies document.

First, Shopify Email is now Shopify Messaging

Shopify renamed Shopify Email to Shopify Messaging when it added SMS marketing to the app. Shopify's changelog calls it "Shopify Messaging, formerly known as Shopify Email", and third-party guides date the rename to December 2025. The email side works as before, and most people still search for it by the old name, so we use both here.

Automations moved, too. On March 24, 2026, marketing automations that send Shopify Messaging emails moved into the Shopify Messaging app, and automations that use other apps' marketing activities moved into Shopify Flow. Nothing needed to change on the merchant's side.

Shopify Email: what you get

Price. Shopify Messaging is included with every paid Shopify plan, from Basic up. Every store gets 10,000 free emails at the start of each month, shared across all campaigns. After that it's $1 per 1,000 emails up to 300,000, with lower rates above that. Abandoned checkout automation emails aren't counted and are always free. Unused emails don't roll over, and any charges land on your Shopify bill. The catch is that you need a paid Shopify plan to use it at all.

What it does well. There's nothing to install or sync. Your products, branding and customers are already there, and product blocks pull straight from your catalog. Anyone on the team can send a simple campaign in a few minutes.

Automations. Shopify ships templates for the core recovery emails: abandoned checkout, abandoned cart and browse abandonment, plus others in its automation library. Shopify's own guide describes the abandoned checkout template as a single email after a 10-hour wait, sent only to customers subscribed to email marketing, and you can change the delay and edit the email. Anything more custom goes through Shopify Flow, a separate workflow tool.

Where stores outgrow it. The sign isn't usually the bill: overage at $1 per 1,000 emails is cheap. It's when email turns into a revenue channel and you want sequences of several emails that stop when someone buys, segments built on what people viewed and bought, and a clear answer to "which flow made money last month?".

Klaviyo: what you get

Price. Klaviyo's Email plan is free up to 250 active profiles with 500 emails a month, then $30/month at 1,000 profiles, $150 at 10,000 and $720 at 50,000. Since February 2025 it bills on active profiles: every profile you can email counts, whether you email it that month or not, though unsubscribed and suppressed profiles don't. A list that grows faster than revenue costs more each month. Our Klaviyo pricing guide breaks down the tiers.

What it does well. Klaviyo's flow builder is one of the deepest in ecommerce. Multi-branch splits let one flow send different people down different paths based on what they bought, where they live or what they did, and a flow preview shows which path a given profile would take. Its Shopify integration syncs your catalog, orders and customer profiles in depth, and its segmentation runs on real purchase and browsing data.

AI. Composer, Klaviyo's AI marketing agent, entered public beta on June 30, 2026. It drafts campaigns and flows for you to review, and it runs on credits: existing customers get 10,000 free credits for 90 days, then paid credit plans start at $14/month. Klaviyo also has an MCP server; see our Klaviyo MCP guide.

The trade-offs. Klaviyo covers email, SMS, reviews and a customer data platform, and the interface reflects that: powerful, but a steep learning curve for a small team. And the price climbs quickly past 10,000 contacts. If cost is the reason you're looking, our list of Klaviyo alternatives compares the options, and Klaviyo vs Omnisend covers the most common head-to-head.

When Shopify Email is enough

Stay on Shopify Email if most of these are true:

  • You send a newsletter or promotion a few times a month and a handful of standard automations.
  • Your list is small enough that you rarely pass 10,000 emails a month, or the overage is a few dollars.
  • Nobody on the team has time to build and maintain flows.
  • You don't need to know which email earned which order.

When stores move to Klaviyo, and what it costs

Stores usually move when email starts to matter to revenue: they want a welcome series that branches on first purchase, an abandoned checkout sequence with several emails, win-backs timed to each customer's buying pattern, and reports by flow.

The cost of that move is the gap in the table. At 10,000 contacts you go from roughly $30/month to $150. At 50,000, from roughly $190 to $720, and Klaviyo's bill keeps growing with your profile count. For a store that will use all of Klaviyo's depth, that can pay for itself. For a store that mainly wants better email flows, it's a big jump.

The middle step: Audienceful

Audienceful is the email platform we make, built for stores that have outgrown Shopify Email: Shopify email marketing, without the Klaviyo bill.

Setup is as simple as Shopify Email's. You install it from the Shopify App Store. Your account is created from the store, with no signup form, and the plan is billed on your Shopify invoice. Customers (with email consent), orders with line items, refunds, checkouts, carts and your product catalog sync in, along with a one-time import of your customers and about the last year of orders. Consent stays in sync both ways with Shopify.

Real flows, ready-made. Eleven Shopify automation templates arrive with their trigger set and emails written, paused until you switch them on: welcome, browse abandonment, added to cart, never checked out, abandoned checkout recovery (three emails over about two days, stopped by a purchase), post-purchase, review request, replenishment, VIP, win-back, holiday countdown and birthday. Nine Shopify events can start a flow, including order paid, fulfilled and cancelled, product viewed and added to cart.

Revenue you can read. Orders are credited to the email that drove them: last click within five days, clicks beat opens, bots excluded and refunds netted. You see revenue per campaign and per automation, and the share of your revenue that came from email. Read how revenue attribution works.

Segments from store data. Build audiences from products purchased, total spend, carts and product views, with time windows ("bought this, not in the last 60 days").

An AI agent on every plan. The built-in agent builds audiences, automations and emails from a brief, with your approval, and our MCP server lets Claude or ChatGPT do the same. Your team can edit the same email at once in a real-time collaborative editor.

Price. Free up to 1,000 contacts, with one automation running and 2,000 emails a month. At 10,000 contacts it's $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly), and at 50,000 it's $272 billed yearly ($320 monthly), with unlimited sends on paid plans. Shopify Email bills you for sends; Audienceful's price covers the flows, attribution and agent that turn those sends into revenue. Against Klaviyo it's about half the price at 10,000 contacts and well under half at 50,000.

How to choose

  • Email is a side channel and the list is small? Shopify Email. It's free and already there.
  • Email is a main channel and you'll use every advanced feature? Klaviyo, if the price at your list size works.
  • You want real flows, segments and revenue per flow without the jump in price? Try Audienceful as the middle step, and keep Shopify's order and shipping notifications as they are.

Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $32/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Install it on your Shopify store and your customers, orders and products sync in a few minutes.

FAQs

Is Shopify Email good enough?

For many small stores, yes. If you send a few campaigns a month and use the standard automations, it's hard to beat a free tool built into your admin. It stops being enough when you want multi-step flows that stop on a purchase, segments built on browsing and buying behavior, and revenue reported by flow.

What's the difference between Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo?

Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) is Shopify's built-in email and SMS app, billed by emails sent with 10,000 free a month. Klaviyo is a separate marketing platform with a deeper flow builder and segmentation, billed by active profiles.

Is Shopify Email free?

The first 10,000 emails each month are free on any paid Shopify plan, and abandoned checkout automation emails don't count. After that it's $1 per 1,000 emails. You need a paid Shopify plan to use it.

Can I use Shopify Email and Klaviyo together?

You can, but most stores pick one for marketing email to avoid sending duplicate automations to the same shoppers. Shopify's order and shipping notifications keep working whichever tool you choose.

Is there something between Shopify Email and Klaviyo?

Yes. Audienceful installs from the Shopify App Store, bills through Shopify, and adds multi-step store flows, Shopify-based segments and revenue per campaign and flow, at $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly) for 10,000 contacts.
