Review Request Emails for Shopify: Timing, Copy and Examples
A Shopify review request email asks a customer to review what they bought once it has arrived and they've had time to use it. The reliable setup is two emails: the first about a week after the order is fulfilled, a gentle reminder about five days later, and a link to wherever your store collects reviews. Each review you collect keeps working on your product pages for every shopper who comes after.
Audienceful has this flow ready-made as the Review request template: it triggers when Shopify marks an order fulfilled and sends both emails on that schedule. We make Audienceful, so we're not neutral. The template arrives paused, with both emails written, so you can have it running in an afternoon.
This guide is part of our series on Shopify email flows.
Why ask by email, and why after fulfillment
Most happy customers never think to leave a review. Many would if asked while the product is in their hands. Email asks that person directly, with one button straight to the review form.
The trigger matters. If you ask on purchase, the email lands before the parcel does, and the customer has nothing to say yet. Triggering on order fulfilled and then waiting starts the clock when the parcel ships, so the ask arrives after delivery and after some use.
Timing
| Send after | Job | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The ask | 7 days after the order is fulfilled | Ask how the order is going and link to the review form |
| 2. The reminder | 5 days after email 1 | One short nudge for anyone who missed the first |
Seven days is the default, not a rule. Set the first wait to your typical delivery time plus a few days of use:
- Fast domestic shipping (2-3 days): 5-7 days is usually right.
- Slow or international shipping: push it to 10-14 days so nobody gets asked before the parcel lands.
- Products that take time to judge (skincare, supplements, a mattress): wait longer still. A customer can't review a serum after two uses.
Send one reminder, not three. A third ask annoys customers who loved the product but were busy.
Email 1: the ask
The template's version opens with "It's been about a week since your order arrived," asks for a quick review, says it takes about a minute, and has one button: Leave a review. It closes with an offer to fix anything that went wrong.
Example subject lines (ours, written for this guide):
- How's your order, {{first_name}}? ⭐
- Quick question about your order
- Got a minute to tell us how it went?
Copy tips:
- Name the product. "How are you finding the oat milk frother?" beats "How was your order?" Add a Product List block set to Dynamic and the email shows the items from that exact order, each linked to its page.
- Say how long it takes. "About a minute" removes the main objection.
- One button, one destination. Link straight to the review form, not your homepage.
- Give unhappy customers a door. "If anything wasn't right, reply and we'll fix it" catches problems before they become a one-star review, and it's good service anyway.
- Ask everyone the same way. Don't send only the customers you expect to be happy to the review page. Google's guidelines warn against selectively asking for positive reviews, and an honest mix of reviews is more convincing anyway.
Email 2: the reminder
Keep it shorter than the first. The template's reminder says "Just circling back in case my last note got buried, no pressure at all," repeats the link with a Share my thoughts button, and thanks the customer with 10% off their next order (code THANKS10).
Example subject lines:
- A quick favor 🙏
- Still happy with your order?
- One minute, one review
Copy tips:
- Don't repeat email 1. Acknowledge it's a follow-up and get to the link in two lines.
- If you include a thank-you code, make it unconditional. Create the code in Shopify, then add it to the email. See the next section before you do.
Where the link points, and the rules on incentives
The review button can point anywhere your reviews live: a review app such as Judge.me, Okendo or Yotpo, a product page with a review form, or your Google Business Profile. Shopify delisted its own Product Reviews app in 2023, so most stores now use a third-party app. Whichever you use, paste its review link into the button.
Review apps like Judge.me can also send their own request emails on a schedule. Pick one sender so customers aren't asked twice. Running the request from your email platform keeps it in your own design, next to your other flows, with revenue reporting on the clicks.
Two rules to know before you add a discount:
- The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (in effect since October 21, 2024) bans offering anything in exchange for a review with a particular sentiment. "10% off for a 5-star review" breaks it. A thank-you offered for any honest review, good or bad, is a different thing, and law firm guidance says to disclose it.
- Google doesn't allow incentives at all. Its content policy prohibits offering discounts, free goods or payment in exchange for reviews. If your link points to Google, drop the code from email 2.
We're not lawyers, so check the rules that apply to your store. The safe default: ask honestly, and keep any thank-you separate from what the customer says.
Variations
- Ask for a photo. For visual products (apparel, home decor), ask for a photo review in email 2.
- One flow per product line. If one range ships slowly or takes weeks to judge, filter the trigger to those products and give it a longer wait.
Set it up in Audienceful
- Install Audienceful from the Shopify App Store. Your account is created from the store, with no signup form, and your plan appears on your Shopify invoice. Customers, orders and products sync in. Already using Audienceful? Connect Shopify from the Integrations tab.
- Apply the template. Open Shopify automations and pick Review request. It arrives with the trigger (order fulfilled), the 7-day and 5-day waits, both emails and a
review-requestedtag. - Edit the copy and the link. Change the subject lines and copy, and point both buttons at your review page.
- Add a Product List block. Set it to Dynamic so each customer sees what they actually ordered.
- Adjust the waits. Set the first wait to your delivery time plus a few days of use. Filter the trigger to specific products if one range needs different timing.
- Switch it on. Templates arrive paused until you turn them on.
You can change any of it. For a click-by-click walkthrough, see the review request flow help doc.
How to measure it
The direct metric is reviews collected, which your review app reports. On the email side, watch the click rate on the review button in each email. If email 2 barely gets clicks, your first wait may be too short.
Audienceful's revenue attribution also counts orders that follow a click on the email (last click within 5 days, refunds netted), so if email 2 carries a thank-you code you'll see what it earned.
Review requests sit after the Shopify post-purchase email in the customer's timeline, and before the replenishment email for anything they'll run out of. The same flows on Klaviyo cost $150/month at 10,000 contacts, against $79 billed yearly ($99 monthly) on Audienceful (list prices as of October 2026; compare at your size with our Klaviyo pricing calculator).
Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $32/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Install it on your Shopify store and switch on the review request flow in a few minutes.
FAQs
When should I send a review request email on Shopify?
About a week after the order is fulfilled, adjusted for your shipping times. The goal is to land after delivery and after a few days of use. Audienceful's Review request template waits 7 days after fulfillment, then sends a reminder 5 days later.
Should I offer a discount for a review?
You can thank customers, but never tie a reward to a positive review: the FTC's rule bans that. Google prohibits review incentives entirely, so skip the code if your link points to Google.
Which review app does the email work with?
Any. The email is a link, so it can point to Judge.me, Okendo, Yotpo, a review form on your product page, or Google. In Audienceful you paste the link into the button.
How many review request emails should I send?
Two: the ask and one reminder. More than that annoys customers who simply didn't want to write one.
Can I send different timing for different products?
Yes. In Audienceful, filter the order fulfilled trigger to specific products and give that flow its own waits, for example a longer wait for products that take weeks to judge.
