Shopify Post-Purchase Emails That Bring Customers Back
A Shopify post-purchase email is the marketing follow-up that goes out after an order is paid: a thank-you that sets expectations right away, then a second email about five days later that helps the customer get the most out of the order and suggests what to buy next. It doesn't replace Shopify's order confirmation or shipping emails. It sits around them, and it's where the second order starts.
This guide covers the timing, what each email says, example subject lines, and how the post-purchase, review request and replenishment flows line up after an order. The setup steps use Audienceful, our email platform for Shopify, which has all three as ready-made templates. We make it, so we're not neutral. For the full set of flows, see our guide to Shopify email flows.
Post-purchase emails vs Shopify's order notifications
Shopify already emails every buyer about their order. Keep those notifications exactly as they are. The post-purchase flow is a different kind of email.
| Sent by | Goes to | Job | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | Shopify | Every buyer | Receipt and order details |
| Shipping confirmation | Shopify | Every buyer, on fulfillment | Tracking link |
| Thank you email after purchase | Your email platform | Buyers who opted in to marketing | Set expectations, build the relationship |
| Order follow-up email | Your email platform | Buyers who opted in to marketing | Tips, then a cross-sell |
The difference in the "Goes to" column matters. Notifications are transactional, so every buyer gets them. Post-purchase emails are marketing, so they reach the customers who said yes to email marketing. Turn on the email opt-in checkbox in your Shopify admin under Settings → Checkout so more buyers can say yes as they pay.
Order paid or order fulfilled: pick the right trigger
Two Shopify events start most after-order email:
- Order paid fires once the payment goes through. Use it for anything about the purchase itself: the thank-you, and the clock for a reorder reminder.
- Order fulfilled fires when the order is fulfilled, which for most stores means it has shipped. Use it for anything that depends on the parcel arriving, such as asking for a review.
A post-purchase thank-you belongs on order paid, so it lands within minutes of the order.
The post-purchase flow: 2 emails over 5 days
| Sends | Job | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Thank you and what's next | Right after the order is paid | Reassure, set shipping expectations |
| 2. Getting the most out of it | 5 days later | Help them use it, then suggest what's next |
Email 1: the thank-you
Example subject lines:
- Thanks for your order! Here's what's next 📦
- Your order's in, {{first_name}}
- Here's what happens next with your order
Lead with thanks and reassurance, not selling. Say when the order ships, roughly when it arrives, and that the tracking link will come in Shopify's shipping email. Use your real numbers: the template's "ships within 1-2 business days" and "3-5 days" delivery are placeholders. Close with an invitation to reply with any question.
Email 2: the follow-up
Example subject lines:
- Getting the most out of your order
- 3 tips for your new [product]
- How to look after your [product]
Time this one to land around delivery. Five days suits many stores; stretch it if you ship slowly. Open with a few practical tips: how to start, how to care for it, who to contact if something's off. Then, lower down, the cross-sell.
If different products need different tips, make a copy of the flow for each product line. Shopify triggers can be filtered to specific products, so a coffee buyer and a grinder buyer each get the follow-up that fits.
The cross-sell: a best-seller feed
The second email's cross-sell works best when it's quiet: a short "pairs well with" or "customers also love" row under the tips, not a sale banner. This customer just paid full price, so there's no need for a discount here.
In Audienceful, that row is a Product List block. Set it to Feed and choose a best-selling product feed with a 30-day lookback. The feed is worked out again on every send, so the row always shows what's selling now, and each product links to its page on your store. If you'd rather choose the pairings yourself, switch the block to Static and pick them.
How the after-order flows fit together
One order can start several flows. Here's how the three after-order templates line up with Shopify's own notifications, for an order that ships two days after it's paid:
| When | From | |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0, order paid | Order confirmation | Shopify |
| Day 0, order paid | Post-purchase email 1: thank you | Post-purchase flow |
| Day 2, order fulfilled | Shipping confirmation | Shopify |
| Day 5 | Post-purchase email 2: getting the most out of it | Post-purchase flow |
| Day 9 (7 days after fulfillment) | How's your order? | Review request flow |
| Day 14 (5 days later) | A quick favor, with 10% off | Review request flow |
| About day 30 (1 month after paid) | Running low? Time to restock | Replenishment flow |
| About day 37 | Subscribe and save | Replenishment flow |
That spacing keeps each email to its own job. A few rules keep it that way:
- Run replenishment only on products that run out. Filter its trigger to your consumables, and set the wait to how long one lasts.
- Ask for the review after arrival. The Shopify review request email waits 7 days after fulfillment, and links to whichever review app or page your store uses.
- Watch first orders. A first-time buyer also gets the Shopify welcome email for new customers on day 0. Add a one-day wait to one of the two flows.

Set it up in Audienceful
- Install Audienceful from the Shopify App Store via our Shopify page. Your account is created from the store and the plan is billed on your Shopify invoice. Customers, orders and products sync in automatically.
- Apply the template. In Automations, pick Post-purchase thank-you & onboarding. It arrives paused, with the order paid trigger, the 5-day wait and both emails written. It runs after every paid order, so repeat customers are looked after too.
- Edit the copy. Put in your real shipping and delivery times and your own product tips. You can change any email, wait or trigger.
- Add the cross-sell. Drop a Product List block into email 2 and set it to your best-seller feed.
- Add the neighbors. Apply Review request and, if you sell consumables, Replenishment / reorder reminder.
- Switch them on. Essentials runs three automations at once; Growth is unlimited.
You can also ask the built-in AI agent to build the flow from a brief, for you to approve, or use our post-purchase recipe with Claude or ChatGPT. Step-by-step help is in the post-purchase flow guide.
At 10,000 contacts, Audienceful's list price is $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly), against $150 for Klaviyo (see the full comparison; list prices as of October 2026). Compare at your own list size with the Klaviyo pricing calculator.
How to measure it
Audienceful credits each Shopify order to the email that drove it: the last click within 5 days, with clicks ahead of opens, bots excluded and refunds netted out. You see revenue for the post-purchase flow on its own, next to review request and replenishment, plus the share of store revenue that came from email. The method is in email revenue attribution.
Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $32/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Install it on your Shopify store and switch on your after-order flows today.
FAQs
Should a post-purchase email replace Shopify's order confirmation?
No. Keep Shopify's order and shipping notifications as they are: every buyer gets them, and they carry the receipt and tracking. The post-purchase flow is marketing that sits around them. Audienceful handles that marketing email and leaves the notifications to Shopify.
When should you send a thank you email after purchase?
Within minutes of the order being paid, while the customer is still thinking about it. Audienceful's template sends it immediately on the order paid event, then sends the follow-up 5 days later.
What should an order follow-up email say?
How to get the most out of what they bought, who to contact if something's wrong, and, lower down, a few products that go with it. Time it to arrive around delivery.
Should a post-purchase email include a discount?
Usually not. The customer just paid full price, and a code the day after can feel like they overpaid. Save the incentive for the second review request email or a Shopify win-back email later on.
Does the post-purchase flow run for repeat customers?
Yes. In Audienceful it runs after every paid order, so a customer's fifth order gets the same care as their first.
