VIP Emails for Your Biggest Spenders
A VIP customer email tells your biggest spenders they're valued, at the moment they cross a spend threshold you choose, and gives them something for it: early access, free shipping, a note from the founder. You don't need a points program to run it. You need a spend-based audience built from your Shopify orders and one well-written email that sends when someone joins it.
Audienceful has this as the VIP / big-spender recognition template: it sends "You're officially a VIP 🌟" when a customer enters your VIP audience and tags them vip for later campaigns. We make Audienceful, so we're not neutral. The audience builds itself from your Shopify orders, so the email goes out the moment someone qualifies.
This guide is part of our series on Shopify email flows.
Why recognize your top customers
In most stores, a small group of repeat buyers accounts for an outsized share of revenue. They already like you. What they rarely get is acknowledgment: they receive the same discount blasts as someone who bought once two years ago.
A reward top customers email changes that at low cost. It doesn't need a discount, because the reward is status and access. And the vip tag it applies lets you treat them differently in every campaign after it.
Step 1: define who counts as a VIP
Pick a total spend threshold. Audiences are built from rules, so "spent over $500" works where "top 50 customers" doesn't. A few ways to choose the number:
- Start from your average order value. Three to five times your AOV picks out people who have bought repeatedly.
- Size the group first. Try several thresholds and look at the count. A VIP club that includes half your customers isn't special. A handful is too small to matter.
- Add a time window. "Spent over $500 in the last 365 days" rewards current loyalty. Without a window, someone who spent big three years ago and never returned also qualifies.
- Consider tiers later. Start with one threshold. Add a second ($1,000+) once the first is working.
Your spend figures come from Shopify orders, so run the historical import when you connect. It brings in about the last year of orders. Without it, total spend only counts orders placed after you installed.
Or describe it in a sentence
Audienceful's built-in AI agent builds the audience from plain language. Type "Build an audience of everyone who's spent over $500 with us in the last year and tell me how many there are," and it drafts the rule, shows you the count, and saves it once you approve. Ask it to try $250 and $1,000 too and compare the sizes. The top customers recipe walks through the whole conversation, and it works from Claude or ChatGPT through Audienceful's MCP server as well.
Step 2: choose perks that don't need a loyalty app
Loyalty apps are good at points and tiers. For a VIP email, you mostly need perks you can deliver with what you already have:
| Perk | How to deliver it | Cost to you |
|---|---|---|
| Early access to launches and sales | Send the launch email to the VIP audience 24-48 hours before everyone else | Nothing |
| A thank-you note from the founder | A plain, personal email from the founder's name, replies go to a real inbox | A few minutes |
| A gift with the next order | Create the code in Shopify (a free-gift or fixed-amount discount), then add it to the email | The gift |
| Free shipping, no minimum | A free-shipping code created in Shopify | Shipping on VIP orders |
| A direct line | "Reply to this email and it comes straight to us" | Your time |
| First look at new products | A VIP-only preview email before the public launch | Nothing |
The template includes three of these out of the box: first access to new products and limited releases, free shipping on every order with no minimum, and a direct line by reply. Keep what you'll actually honor, and cut what you won't. A perk you announce and then forget does more damage than no perk at all.
Step 3: write the VIP email
The template's email opens with "Some news: you're now one of Company's VIPs," lists the perks, says "It's our way of saying thank you for being one of our most loyal customers," and ends with a See your VIP perks button.
Example subject lines (ours, written for this guide):
- You're officially a VIP 🌟
- A thank-you from our founder
- You're on the list now, {{first_name}}
Copy tips:
- Say why they qualified. "You're one of the customers who keeps coming back" makes the status feel earned rather than automatic.
- Make perks concrete. "Early access" means little. "You'll get every launch email 48 hours before anyone else" means something.
- Write it like a person. Send it from the founder's name, keep the design simple, and invite a reply. A plain note often feels more personal than a designed promotion.
- Show what's new, not what's on sale. A Product List block with a Feed of your newest products fits the "first look" perk better than a discount grid.
Step 4: keep the promise
The email is the start. Use the VIP audience and the vip tag to deliver what you promised:
- Send launch and sale emails to VIPs first, then to everyone a day or two later.
- Exclude VIPs from your deepest discount campaigns if you'd rather they feel recognized than trained to wait for sales.
- Send a short founder note a few times a year with no ask at all.
Set it up in Audienceful
- Install Audienceful from the Shopify App Store. Your account is created from your store and the plan is billed on your Shopify invoice. Customers, orders and products sync in. Already a user? Connect Shopify from the Integrations tab.
- Build the VIP audience. In People, create an audience with a Total spend condition (for example, at least $500 in the last 365 days), or ask the AI agent to build it. The audience stays current as orders come in. The audience triggers help doc covers the options.
- Apply the template. Open Shopify automations, pick VIP / big-spender recognition, and set its trigger to your new audience.
- Edit the email. Change the perks to the ones you'll honor, add any codes you created in Shopify, and set the sender name.
- Switch it on. Templates arrive paused. From then on, each customer who crosses your threshold gets the email once and the
viptag.
The flow is built to catch customers as they cross the line. For customers who already qualify when you switch it on, send the same email once as a campaign to the VIP audience. You can change any part of the template: add a second email, a wait, or a different tag.
How to measure it
Audienceful's revenue attribution reports revenue per automation and per campaign, using the last click within 5 days, with refunds netted and bot clicks excluded. Watch two things: revenue from the VIP email itself, and revenue from the early-access campaigns you send to the audience afterward. The second is usually where the program pays off.
Your VIP segment is also the audience a Shopify win-back email should protect most. If a VIP stops ordering, that's the customer to reach first. For the broader strategy, see email segmentation.
At 10,000 contacts, Audienceful costs $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly), against $150 for Klaviyo (list prices as of October 2026; see the Klaviyo pricing calculator for your list size). The AI agent and revenue attribution are included on every plan.
Audienceful is free up to 1,000 contacts, then paid plans start at $32/month billed yearly ($37.50 monthly) for 3,000 contacts. Install it on your Shopify store and send your first VIP email this week.
FAQs
What is a VIP customer email?
An email that recognizes a high-value customer, usually when they pass a spend threshold, and tells them about perks such as early access or free shipping. In Audienceful it sends automatically when someone enters your VIP audience.
How do I find my Shopify VIP customers?
Build an audience on total spend from your Shopify orders, for example everyone who spent over $500 in the last 365 days. In Audienceful you can build it in the audience builder or ask the AI agent in a sentence, and check the count before saving.
What threshold should I use for VIP status?
Start around three to five times your average order value, check how many customers that includes, and adjust until the group feels exclusive but meaningful. Add a time window so it reflects recent spending.
Do I need a loyalty app to reward top customers?
No. Early access, a founder's thank-you, a gift with the next order and free shipping all work with an audience, an email and a code created in Shopify.
Will customers who already qualify get the VIP email?
The automation catches customers as they enter the audience. For customers who already qualified when you switched it on, send the VIP email once as a campaign to the audience.
