How to Build a Post-Purchase Email Flow for Shopify
The moment after a purchase is when customers are most engaged with your brand, and it's the foundation of repeat business. A post-purchase email flow confirms the order, sets expectations, helps the customer get value, and gently opens the door to the next purchase.
Here's how to build one in Audienceful for your Shopify store.
What you'll need
- A Shopify integration connected to your workspace.
- Two short emails.
How the post-purchase flow works
When a Shopify order is paid, the customer enters your automation:
- A thank-you and confirmation that sets expectations, sent right away.
- A short wait.
- A follow-up that helps them get the most out of what they bought, with a light cross-sell.
Because it's repeatable, it runs after every paid order, so returning customers get looked after too.
Step 1: Connect Shopify
Connect your store from the Integrations tab. The Order paid trigger then appears in the automation builder.
Step 2: Write your two emails
- Email 1: thank-you + expectations. Confirm the order, tell them what happens next (shipping, timelines), and set a friendly tone. Example subject: "Thanks for your order! Here's what's next 📦"
- Email 2: get value + cross-sell. Help them use or enjoy the product, and suggest complementary items. Example subject: "Getting the most out of your order"
Personalize with the {{first_name}} merge tag.
Step 3: Build the automation
In the Automations tab, click New Automation:
- Trigger: Shopify event → Order paid.
- Send Email 1 immediately.
- Wait 5 days.
- Send Email 2 with tips and a cross-sell.
- Optionally add a tag like
customer.
Pick your theme and click Run.
Best practices
- Lead with reassurance, not selling. The first email should make the customer feel good about their purchase; save the cross-sell for later.
- Time the second email to arrival. Aim to land your "getting the most out of it" email around when the product shows up.
- Segment your repeat buyers. Tagging customers here feeds audiences and other flows like replenishment and reviews.

Frequently asked questions
Should the post-purchase flow ask for a review? You can, but a dedicated review request flow that triggers on fulfillment times the ask better: after the product has actually arrived.
Does it run for repeat customers too? Yes. The flow is repeatable, so it runs after every paid order.
