Publications & the Subscriber Preference Center

Publications let you offer more than one thing to subscribe to. Instead of a single all-or-nothing list, you can run several newsletters or topics from one workspace — say a "Weekly Digest," a "Product Updates" list, and a "Big Announcements" list — and let each subscriber choose which ones they want.

This is one of the best tools you have for keeping people subscribed. When someone's only option is to unsubscribe from everything, they often do. When they can instead dial down to just the emails they care about, you keep the relationship (and protect your deliverability, since fewer unsubscribes and spam complaints mean a healthier sender reputation).

What a publication is

A publication is a named list your subscribers can opt into or out of independently. Each one has:

  • A name, optional description, and an emoji so it's easy to recognize.
  • A default setting for whether new contacts are subscribed to it automatically.
  • A toggle for whether it appears on your public preference page.

Consent is tracked per person, per publication — so someone can be happily subscribed to your digest while having opted out of promotions, and Audienceful respects that on every send.

The preference page

Every workspace gets a hosted preference page — a branded page where subscribers manage their own subscriptions. You can customize:

  • The headline and intro copy
  • Your logo and an accent color
  • Which profile fields subscribers are allowed to edit themselves (name, etc.)

This is where the one-click unsubscribe link in your footer can point, giving people a real choice — turn off one topic instead of leaving entirely — and letting them keep their own details up to date.

How people subscribe

Subscribers can be added to (or removed from) a publication in several ways:

  • On your preference page, by managing their own subscriptions.
  • Through forms, by subscribing to a publication when they sign up.
  • On import or via the API, when you're bringing contacts in.
  • Inside automations, using the "subscribe to publication" and "unsubscribe from publication" actions.

Putting publications to work

Because publication membership is a real property of each contact, it plugs into the rest of Audienceful:

  • Segment by it. Build an audience of everyone subscribed (or not subscribed) to a given publication, and send to exactly that group.
  • Trigger from it. Start an automation when someone subscribes to or leaves a publication — perfect for a topic-specific welcome or win-back sequence.

Used well, publications turn a single blunt "unsubscribe" into a set of dials your readers control — which is better for them and better for your numbers.
