Mailchimp for Shopify in 2026: What Works and the Alternatives

Kevin Scotton October 27, 2026

Yes, Mailchimp works with Shopify again. As of October 2026, Mailchimp's own app on the Shopify App Store syncs your customers, orders, products and storefront events into a Mailchimp audience, and abandoned cart emails run on Mailchimp's paid plans. It's a reasonable setup for a small store already on Mailchimp, but the bill rises quickly with your list: $230/month at 10,000 contacts.

This guide covers what the integration does today, where it fits, and what to use instead if the price stops making sense.

Our bias, up front: we make Audienceful, an email marketing platform with its own Shopify app and a native Mailchimp import. We've kept the Mailchimp sections to Mailchimp's own documentation and reporting we link at the end.

A short history of Mailchimp and Shopify

In March 2019, Mailchimp pulled its app from the Shopify App Store after a dispute over customer data terms, and the two companies put out statements blaming each other. For two years, Shopify merchants who wanted Mailchimp used third-party connectors.

In October 2021, a few weeks after Intuit agreed to buy Mailchimp, the two reconciled. Mailchimp acquired ShopSync, one of those connectors, to power a new official app, signed a new data-processing agreement with Shopify, and retired the ShopSync app. That official app is the integration stores use today.

What the Mailchimp Shopify integration does (as of October 2026)

You install the app from the Shopify App Store, sign in to Mailchimp (or create an account), choose the audience your store data goes to, and run the first sync. After that, according to Mailchimp's help center:

  • Customers are added to your audience with their subscription status, email, name, order information and fields such as birthdays and phone numbers.
  • Orders and products sync too, and the app page in Shopify shows how many customers, products and orders have synced.
  • Customer tags sync one way, from Shopify to Mailchimp. You can sync all of them or pick which ones.
  • Timing: everything except discount codes syncs in real time. Discount codes sync every few hours, or on demand from the app page.
  • Storefront events such as product views, cart activity and checkouts are shared with Mailchimp to power abandoned cart automations. Mailchimp notes these are limited if your store has Shopify's GDPR or CCPA settings turned on.
  • Activity flows back. Mailchimp's email activity is shared with Shopify.
  • Popup forms are built in Mailchimp and shown on your store once the Mailchimp for Shopify app embed is enabled in your theme settings.

What it costs to use: the app's Shopify App Store listing shows a free plan, and pricing follows your Mailchimp plan, which is based on contacts. Mailchimp's Shopify page notes that its marketing automation flows are only available on paid plans. The free plan was cut to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month in February 2026, after automations had already been removed from it. Our Mailchimp price increase post has the full history.

One more thing to check: Mailchimp recommends turning off any abandoned cart emails sent from outside Mailchimp, such as Shopify's own, so customers don't get two.

When Mailchimp is fine for a Shopify store

  • You already use it. Your list, templates and team habits are in Mailchimp, and your store is one part of a wider business.
  • You mostly send newsletters, with a welcome series and an abandoned cart flow on top.
  • You like its tooling. Mailchimp has a huge template library and a Customer Journey Builder with branching.

Where Mailchimp gets expensive

Mailchimp prices by contacts, and it counts unsubscribed contacts toward your bill. Third-party breakdowns of its pricing say non-subscribed contacts count too. A Shopify sync brings in your customers with their subscription status, so check your billable count after the first sync: a store with many past buyers who never opted in can land in a higher tier than its marketing list suggests.

Monthly list prices as of October 2026:

Contacts Mailchimp Audienceful
1,000 $45 Free
10,000 $230 $79 billed yearly ($99 monthly)
50,000 $450 $272 billed yearly ($320 monthly)

Prices change, so check Mailchimp's pricing page for your exact list. To compare Klaviyo, Omnisend and Audienceful at your list size, use the Klaviyo pricing calculator. For a wider look at the options, see the best Mailchimp alternatives.

The Mailchimp Shopify alternative: Audienceful

Audienceful covers both halves of the move.

A native Mailchimp import. Connect your Mailchimp account from the Integrations tab (an OAuth sign-in, no API key) and pick the audiences to bring over. Every member is matched to a contact by email address, so nobody is duplicated. Each audience becomes a tag plus a ready-made audience, merge fields become custom fields, and subscriber statuses carry over: unsubscribed stays unsubscribed, cleaned addresses are marked as bounced, and pending contacts stay pending. The import only ever makes a contact more suppressed, never less, so it's safe to run again. See how to import contacts from Mailchimp.

A Shopify app. Install Audienceful from the Shopify App Store and your account is created from your store, with your plan billed on your Shopify invoice. It syncs customers, orders with line items, refunds, checkouts, carts and your product catalog, with a one-time historical import of customers and about a year of orders. Email consent stays in sync with Shopify both ways.

Then:

  • Eleven ready-made store flows, paused until you switch them on, including abandoned checkout recovery, browse abandonment, post-purchase thank-you and lapsed customer win-back. See all Shopify flows.
  • Audiences from store data: products purchased, total spend, carts and product views, with time windows.
  • Revenue attribution: each order is credited to the campaign or flow that drove it (last click within 5 days, bots excluded, refunds netted). See how attribution works.
  • An AI agent on every plan that builds audiences, flows and emails from a brief, with your approval, plus an MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT.
  • Unlimited sends on paid plans, a real-time collaborative editor, A/B testing, and signup forms and popups shown through the theme app embed.
