How to Import Your Mailchimp Contacts into Audienceful

Moving from Mailchimp? Audienceful's native Mailchimp integration connects straight to your account and imports your audiences for you — members, tags, merge fields, and subscriber statuses all come across. There's no CSV to export, map, and clean up by hand.

Connect your Mailchimp account

  1. In Audienceful, go to the Integrations tab and choose Mailchimp, then click Install/Connect.
  2. You'll be sent to Mailchimp to authorize Audienceful. Sign in to Mailchimp if prompted and approve access.
  3. Mailchimp redirects you back to Audienceful, and your account shows as Connected.

There's no API key to copy or paste — the connection uses Mailchimp's secure OAuth flow, and the authorization doesn't expire.

Choose which audiences to import

After connecting, Audienceful shows your Mailchimp audiences (lists) with their member counts. Audiences you've already imported are badged so you don't run them twice.

Select one or more audiences and start the import. That's it — the rest happens automatically in the background.

Free plan limit: free workspaces can import up to 2,000 contacts (the same cap as CSV imports). If your selected audiences add up to more than that, upgrade your plan to import the full list.

What comes across

For each audience you import, Audienceful brings in:

  • Every member, matched to a contact by email address. A person who's on more than one audience becomes a single contact — no duplicates.
  • A tag per audience, named Mailchimp: <audience name>, plus a matching audience (segment) built on that tag, so the groups you had in Mailchimp are ready to use right away.
  • Merge fields as custom fields. Mailchimp's stock fields map onto the fields you already have — FNAME/LNAME fill First Name and Last Name, ADDRESS is split into City, State, and Postal Code so each is filterable, and PHONE lands on the contact's phone number. Any custom merge fields you created come across as new custom fields named after the merge tag.

Subscriber statuses are respected

Your contacts' standing carries over so you stay compliant from day one:

Mailchimp status In Audienceful
Subscribed Active and sendable
Unsubscribed Unsubscribed (keeps the original opt-out date)
Cleaned (hard bounce) Marked as bounced
Pending (never confirmed) Pending double opt-in
Transactional (never opted into marketing) Imported, but kept out of your sendable list
Archived Skipped — archived members aren't imported

The import is also suppression-safe: it will only ever make a contact more suppressed, never less. Re-running an import upserts contacts in place and can't resurrect anyone who unsubscribed or bounced, so it's safe to run again if you add contacts in Mailchimp later.

Large lists

Big audiences are no problem. The import processes each audience page by page in the background, and multiple audiences import one after another, so even a list with 100,000+ members imports reliably. Feel free to leave the Integrations page — the import keeps running, and you can cancel an in-progress import at any time.

Disconnecting

You can disconnect at any time from the integration page, or by revoking Audienceful's access from within your Mailchimp account. Either removes the connection from your workspace.
