How to Build an Add-to-Cart Abandonment Flow for Shopify

There's a gap between browsing a product and abandoning checkout: shoppers who added an item to their cart but never started checkout. An add-to-cart abandonment flow recovers exactly those shoppers: people with strong intent who stalled before the checkout page.

This guide covers how to build one in Audienceful, including a conditional step so anyone who buys is automatically skipped.

What you'll need

  • A Shopify integration connected to your workspace.
  • Audienceful's storefront tracking pixel installed on your store. The "added to cart" event comes from the pixel.
  • One or two emails.

Like browse abandonment, this flow relies on the Audienceful storefront pixel (the cart/added event is pixel-generated, not a Shopify webhook). Install the pixel before building this flow.

How the add-to-cart flow works

When a known shopper adds an item to their cart, the pixel records an added to cart event and enters them into your automation:

  1. A short wait, then a nudge to complete the purchase.
  2. A tag so you can segment cart-adders.
  3. A wait, then a conditional check. Only shoppers who still haven't purchased get the final sweetener (like free shipping). Buyers exit.

The conditional is what keeps this flow polite: it forks the sequence so you never offer a discount to someone who already checked out.

Step 1: Connect Shopify and install the pixel

Connect the store from Integrations and install the storefront pixel. The Added to cart trigger then appears in the builder.

Step 2: Write your emails

  • Email 1: the nudge. Their cart is waiting; make returning frictionless and mention a reason to act (free shipping threshold, popular item). Example subject: "Your cart's waiting ⏳"
  • Email 2: the closer (conditional). A sweetener like free shipping for shoppers who still haven't bought. Example subject: "Free shipping if you order today"

Step 3: Build the automation

In the Automations tab, click New Automation:

  1. Trigger: Shopify event → Added to cart.
  2. Wait ~2 hours, then send Email 1.
  3. Add a tag like cart-no-checkout (placed before the branch, where everyone passes through).
  4. Wait 1 day.
  5. Add a Conditional that checks whether the shopper has not purchased. On the yes branch, send Email 2 (the free-shipping offer). On the no branch, end the flow.

Pick your theme and click Run.

If you start from our template, remember to reconfigure the conditional's condition after applying. Conditions don't carry across when a template is duplicated into your workspace, so you'll re-point it at your "has not purchased" check.

Best practices

  • Move faster than browse abandonment. A cart-add is higher intent, so a ~2-hour first touch works well.
  • Use the conditional. It's the difference between a helpful nudge and discounting a sale you already made.
  • Keep it to two emails. Cart-adders don't need a long sequence; a nudge and a closer is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the abandoned cart flow? The abandoned cart flow triggers once a shopper reaches checkout. This one triggers earlier, the moment an item is added to cart, so it reaches shoppers who never made it to the checkout page.

Do I really need the conditional step? It's strongly recommended. Without it, a shopper who added to cart, then checked out normally, could still receive your "here's free shipping" email, training customers to wait for discounts.
