How to Build a Browse Abandonment Email Flow for Shopify
A browse abandonment flow emails shoppers who viewed a product on your store but left without adding it to their cart. It captures buying intent even earlier than cart abandonment, reaching people who were clearly interested but never took the next step.
This guide shows you how to build one in Audienceful for your Shopify store.
What you'll need
- A Shopify integration connected to your workspace.
- Audienceful's storefront tracking pixel installed on your Shopify store. The "product viewed" event is generated by the pixel, so browse abandonment won't fire without it.
- A known email for the shopper (the pixel associates on-site views with contacts who've identified themselves, e.g. via a signup form or a previous order).
- One or two emails.
Unlike the abandoned checkout flow, browse abandonment depends on the Audienceful pixel. Install the pixel on your storefront first, or the products/viewed trigger will have nothing to fire on.
How the browse abandonment flow works
When a known shopper views a product page, the pixel records a product viewed event, which enters them into your automation. From there:
- A short wait (so you're not emailing them the second they close the tab).
- An email that brings the viewed product back to mind, with reasons to buy.
- A follow-up leaning on social proof: reviews and ratings.
Because the flow is repeatable, it re-arms each time a shopper browses without buying.
Step 1: Connect Shopify and install the pixel
Connect your store from the Integrations tab, then install Audienceful's storefront pixel. Once both are in place, the Product viewed trigger becomes available in the automation builder.
Step 2: Write your two emails
- Email 1: the reminder. Reference that they were looking at a product, restate why it's great, and address common pre-purchase questions (is it worth it? what if it's not right?). Example subject: "Still thinking about what you saw?"
- Email 2: social proof. Let other customers do the selling with a star rating and a short review quote. Example subject: "Here's what other customers think"
Personalize with the {{first_name}} merge tag.
Step 3: Build the automation
In the Automations tab, click New Automation:
- Trigger: Shopify event → Product viewed.
- Wait ~4 hours, then send Email 1.
- Wait 1 day, then send Email 2.
- Optionally add a tag like
browsed-no-purchaseso you can segment these shoppers.
Pick your theme and click Run.
Best practices
- Don't be creepy. Keep the copy about the category or the product they viewed, not "we saw you looking." Helpful, not surveillance.
- Wait a few hours. Immediate follow-up feels intrusive; a few hours later feels like a helpful nudge.
- Lead with value, not discounts. Browsers are early in the journey, so reviews and reassurance convert better than a coupon here.
Start from a template
The ready-made template arrives with both emails and the timing already set.

Frequently asked questions
How is browse abandonment different from cart abandonment? Browse abandonment triggers when someone views a product but never adds it to cart. Cart/checkout abandonment triggers later, once they've reached checkout. Browse abandonment reaches a bigger, earlier-stage audience.
Why do I need the pixel? Shopify doesn't send a webhook for product views, so Audienceful's storefront pixel generates the "product viewed" event. Without it, there's no browse signal to trigger on.
